I needed some telephone cable so I walked into the shop tucked in between the garden centre and the ouzeria.

Giorgos, behind the counter, was friendly and efficient. So I asked him if his lighting and electrical goods shop also did electrical installations.

“Neah” said Giorgos in the affirmative”what do you need and where are you from?”

I passed him our business card which had a photograph of the house and a small map. ” I know that house” piped Giorgos and he stood looking  directly at me. What he said next still has the power to unnerve me. Bear in mind I had only been in the town a few weeks and I had never met Giorgos before.

“Ian Nicholas Baker”

“Shit!” I thought.”Tax man?” (I don’t know why either) “Policeman? Bureaucrat?…..Stalker? How does this man know my name?”

“I did the electrical audit on your house when you first decided to buy it and George(the local agent and civil engineer) gave me your name as a reference”

So with such an unususual footing to our forthcoming friendship and knowing he had an unerring eye for detail Giorgos and his team were instructed to start the complete rewiring of our house. Over the next few weeks Giorgos, Lefteris, Christos and Vangelis ripped apart the house and stripped out all the ancient wiring. Our house was one of the very first houses to have electrical power on the island dating back to 1952. An ageing 66 year old light switch was the evidence.

Giorgos’ advice was that we should make the house Three Phase ready (Three Faces according to Giorgos) and  install two electrical panels, one upstairs and one down, so that we would have the ability to turn the house into two apartments if we so choose.

Great advice and we are now rewired and ready for the installation of all the lighting and appliances that we aim to install in 2019.
